THE STORY
Reported Haunting
Dating to 1836, the Red Brick Tavern has served as both an inn and tavern and has accumulated numerous ghost stories. Guests have reported apparitions, footsteps, and unexplained noises inside the historic building.
Built in 1836, the building has been used as an inn and tavern, private home, and school. Now a restaurant, its menu features, among other dishes, steak dinners named after the six presidents who have visited here: John Quincy Adams, Martin Van Buren, William Henry Harrison, John Tyler, Zachary Taylor and Warren G. Harding. A female ghost is said to reside on the upper floors, creating creaking footsteps and appearing in upstairs windows. As legend has it, she was a former resident who committed suicide upon finding that her beloved had forsaken her. The legend goes on to say she embroidered a sampler before her death that says “Remember Me,” and the sampler is on display in the second floor hallway.
