Reported Haunting
The Redwood Library and Athenaeum is associated with reports of ghostly apparitions connected to its centuries-old history. Visitors have reported phantom footsteps, mysterious voices, shadow figures, and unexplained cold spots throughout the historic library. It is considered one of Newport's haunted landmarks.
Founded in 1747, it is the oldest community library still occupying its original building in the United States. A male entity has been sighted by staff wandering around the library during the evening, and people report that the eyes in the paintings on the walls follow them as they move around the room.
