Rice Hope Plantation is home to the legend of "Mistress Chicken," a resident ghost said to watch over the property. Witnesses have reported apparitions and unexplained activity around the plantation grounds.
Mistress Chicken is the name of this plantation’s resident ghost. She rocks in a rocking chair inside the Heron Room. It is said that she exists to comfort a child who once lived at this plantation and was once tied to a tombstone by a nasty schoolmaster as punishment. The schoolmaster forgot about the little girl until after dark, and while not hurt, she was emotionally scarred by the incident. Mistress Chicken, believed to be a spirit of the child’s grandmother or nanny, was a comfort to the child.
