THE STORY

Reported Haunting

Richmond Bridge was constructed by convict labor and is reportedly haunted by George Grover, a cruel overseer who flogged prisoners working at the site. His apparition is said to peer from the bridge's western side, while the ghost of his dog reportedly follows people crossing at night.

Completed in 1825, Richmond Bridge is Australia's oldest surviving stone arch bridge. Convicts from nearby Richmond Gaol quarried and transported the sandstone used in its construction. One overseer, George Grover, reportedly treated the prisoners with exceptional cruelty and was later killed after being pushed from the bridge. Visitors have reported seeing Grover's ghost watching from the western side and encountering the spectral dog said to accompany nighttime pedestrians.
