THE STORY
Reported Haunting
Visitors report phantom Civil War gunfire and cannon fire, apparitions of soldiers, unexplained footsteps and voices, children's laughter, and other unusual phenomena throughout Asheville's historic Riverside Cemetery.
Riverside Cemetery was established in Asheville in 1885 and contains the graves of thousands of people, including prominent local figures, military veterans and eighteen German sailors who died while held as prisoners during World War I. The cemetery lies near the site of the Battle of Asheville. Over the years visitors and ghost-tour guides have reported phantom cannon and musket fire, marching sounds, Confederate soldiers appearing among the graves, disembodied voices, footsteps, children's laughter and other unexplained activity. Reports of mist, unusual lights and strange visual phenomena have also centered on the old receiving vault and other historic sections of the cemetery.
