THE STORY

Reported Haunting

The bungalow associated with Jackie Hernandez became the center of a widely publicized late-1980s poltergeist case involving apparitions, moving objects, strange substances and an alleged physical attack on an investigator.

In 1988 and 1989, Jackie Hernandez reported escalating paranormal activity after moving into a bungalow on West 11th Street in San Pedro. Her accounts included objects moving or being thrown, unexplained lights, apparitions and a disembodied head seen near the attic. Parapsychologist Barry Taff and a team that included Barry Conrad and Jeff Wheatcraft investigated the claims. During one visit, Wheatcraft reported that a clothesline wrapped around his neck in the attic and nearly strangled him. The case received extensive media attention, including coverage by the Los Angeles Times, and later became the subject of a documentary. All supernatural claims remain alleged.
