THE STORY

Reported Haunting

The tunnel beneath a cemetery is associated with one of Tokyo's classic roadway ghost stories, particularly sightings of a woman appearing inside or beside passing vehicles.

Sendagaya Tunnel opened in 1964 and passes beneath part of the cemetery belonging to Senjuin Temple. It later became one of Tokyo's best-known urban ghost-story locations. Accounts typically involve a pale or long-haired woman appearing in the tunnel, sometimes reflected in mirrors or photographed unexpectedly.
