THE STORY

Reported Haunting

The old tunnel at Shenks Ferry is home to the Lancaster County legend of the "White Angel," a mysterious woman in white reportedly seen in and around the tunnel and nearby railroad tracks. Other accounts describe unexplained lights, phantom figures, strange handprints, sulfur-like odors, and vehicles suddenly refusing to start.

The stone tunnel on Green Hill Road near Shenks Ferry is associated with one of Lancaster County's most enduring roadside ghost legends: the White Angel. Versions of the story differ dramatically. Some describe a bride who hanged herself at the tunnel after being abandoned at the altar, while others claim a woman or her lover was murdered there. A separate account attributed to retired Conrail locomotive engineer Jack Niess offers a possible historical origin. Niess said that in 1974 an approximately eighteen-year-old woman dressed in a white sheet was struck and killed by a freight train directly above the underpass. He further recalled railroad crews later reporting a white figure moving along the tracks and referring to it as the "White Angel." The 1974 account has not been independently confirmed by surviving contemporary news coverage and should therefore be regarded as testimony rather than established fact. Modern visitors have reported cars that unexpectedly refuse to start, mysterious headlights or lights in the surrounding woods, unexplained handprints, unusual odors, and sightings of a woman in white. More recent firsthand accounts continue to keep the White Angel legend alive.
