According to Wyoming folklore, a phantom ship occasionally appears on the Platte River carrying ghostly sailors and revealing the face of someone about to die. The legend has been passed down for generations and remains one of the state's most famous supernatural stories.
This phantom ship has been seen and talked about since the mid-1800s. Those who have seen it say it first materializes as a mysterious fog over a small part of the river. Out of the fog sails an ethereal gray ship from long ago. The ship is said to be an omen of death, and whoever sees it will lose someone close to them. The ship is manned by a ghostly crew, all working around a body laid on the deck – the body of someone close to the person who sees the phantom ship.
