THE STORY

Reported Haunting

Campers at historic Sickman's Mill have reported an eerie green glow appearing in third-floor windows despite no apparent source inside the building. Other accounts include a human-shaped figure within the glow and unexplained whistling heard inside the empty mill.

Sickman's Mill along Pequea Creek traces its history to at least the late eighteenth century and has operated at various times as a grist mill, flour mill, distillery, oil mill, sawmill, museum, campground, and recreation destination. Local legend claims that a miller was murdered during a robbery in the early 1800s, although surviving newspaper records have not confirmed that story. A documented tragedy occurred on December 1, 1845, when Frederick Pfeifer was killed while hauling wheat toward the mill after his wagon and horses slipped toward a steep bank during snowy weather. The property's best-known paranormal reports date to its years as a campground. On multiple occasions, campers reportedly saw an eerie green light glowing from different third-floor windows. Inspections the following morning found no obvious source capable of producing the light. One witness later recalled seeing both the green glow and the shape of a person standing in a third-floor window. More recently, an owner reported that his wife heard someone whistling inside the mill while she was locking the otherwise empty building. Whether these reports have any connection to Pfeifer or another person remains unknown.
