THE STORY

Reported Haunting

The Smith Mansion overlooking Cody is famous for both its unusual architecture and ghost stories following the death of its builder. Visitors have reported apparitions, mysterious lights, phantom footsteps, and unexplained sounds within the unfinished structure. The mansion has become one of Wyoming's most intriguing haunted landmarks.

This solitary mansion is only half-finished, with staircases that lead to nowhere, half-finished rooms and a rambling log structure that makes it so famous for its unusual construction. The original architect who designed and built the house entirely on his own feel to his death from the second storey, and many visitors have reportedly seen a man in cowboy boots wandering the upper levels of the structure. Legend says that on the site that the architect died, a solitary rose bush grows alone, despite the constant bad weather. Doors open and close by themselves, unexplained noises and voices are heard and disembodied footsteps have been reported inside the structure when there is no one around. The house is also believed to be haunted by an aggressive entity, which throws things at people and shouts at them.
