THE STORY
Reported Haunting
The South County Museum is associated with reports of paranormal activity connected to its historic buildings and artifacts. Visitors have described phantom footsteps, mysterious voices, shadow figures, and unexplained movement after closing. Staff members have also reported unusual encounters throughout the property.
The South County Museum, founded in 1933, was moved twice before 1984 when it arrived here at Canochet Farm, former home of 12th governor of Rhode Island, Colonel William Sprague and his wife Kate Chase, daughter of Abraham Lincoln’s Secretary of the Treasury Salmon P. Chase. Apparitions have been reported in the Metz Building, and some folks have noticed uneasy feelings in its basement as well as in the museum hall. Objects also move on their own here, and an apparition was seen by an employee in the reflection of a computer screen.
