THE STORY
Reported Haunting
Spook Rock is the historic center of a long-running local legend in Montebello, New York. The large boulder became associated with supernatural stories dating back generations, while the surrounding Spook Rock Road later developed its own reputation for apparitions, strange sounds, screams from the woods, shadowy figures, cold spots, and an apparent gravity-hill effect.
Spook Rock, located along Spook Rock Road in the Montebello area of Rockland County, is the centerpiece of one of the region's oldest supernatural legends. Historical accounts describe the rock as having significance to local Indigenous people, although later stories involving deaths, sacrifices, or violent events at the site should be regarded as folklore rather than established history. As European settlers moved into the area, stories developed about mysterious sounds, strange figures, and unexplained activity around the rock. The name "Spook Rock" reflects the Dutch-influenced use of the word "spook" for a ghost or supernatural being. Over time, the surrounding Spook Rock Road became part of the legend as well. Visitors and local folklore describe apparitions, shadow figures, screams or voices from the woods, unexplained cold spots, and other unusual experiences along the roadway. The road is also associated with a so-called gravity hill, where vehicles placed in neutral can appear to roll uphill, an effect generally attributed to the surrounding terrain and visual perspective. Because the legends of the rock and the roadway have become closely intertwined, Ghost Atlas treats Spook Rock and Spook Rock Road as a single location rather than separate haunted sites.
