THE STORY

Reported Haunting

St. Philip's Graveyard is best known for the legend of Sue Howard Hardy, who died shortly after losing her infant in 1888. A famous photograph taken nearly a century later appears to show a shrouded woman grieving over a child's grave, and her spirit is still said to visit the burial ground.

St. Philip’s Graveyard is adjacent to the historic St. Philip’s Episcopal Church, established in 1680. Among those buried here are Southern writer DuBose Heyward, former U.S. vice president John C. Calhoun, and other politicians form the country’s early days. An apparition of a woman crying over a grave has turned up in a photograph taken here, and witnesses claim to have heard strange noises, such as a baby crying.
