THE STORY
Reported Haunting
This property once held Linda Hazzard's notorious sanitarium, where patients endured extreme fasting treatments and several died. Visitors to the surviving grounds have reported apparitions, voices, and other activity attributed to Hazzard's victims.
Linda Burfield Hazzard and her husband Sam ran a sanitarium in the 1900s. Hazzard believed in “therapeutic fasting,” or treating illness with extreme starvation. More than 40 patients died as a result of this treatment. Hazzard also was convicted of forging patients’ wills in order to steal their valuables. The building’s foundation is said to remain, as well as the incinerator where bodies were burned. Spirits of many patients haunt the grounds, including young boys Jeff and Kyle. “Starvation Heights” by Gregg Olsen is a history about Hazzard, which also has been made into a play. A brief history of Hazzard also was mentioned on Season 4 of Ghost Hunters, and she was profiled on the TV show “Deadly Women” on the Investigation Discovery Network.
