THE STORY
Reported Haunting
Visitors and local storytellers describe phantom pickaxes, explosions and the sounds of unseen railroad workers echoing from the unfinished tunnel.
The unfinished Stumphouse Tunnel was part of an ambitious nineteenth-century railroad project through the Blue Ridge Mountains. Regional ghost lore says the sounds of picks, tools, explosions and unseen workers can sometimes be heard deep within the dark tunnel even when no one else is present.
