THE STORY
Reported Haunting
Established in 1874, the Surf City Hotel is considered one of the Jersey Shore's most haunted landmarks. Guests and employees have reported apparitions, unexplained footsteps, flickering lights, and the lingering presence of former owner "Captain" Huddy.
At this late-1800s hotel, apparitions have been seen and unexplained voices heard. Rumor has it that the hauntings may stem from a shipwreck of the Powhattan in 1854, which killed some 300 people. Bodies from the shipwreck were stored in this building for a bit, and it is said that then-owner Edward Jennings robbed their bodies. One of the apparitions seen here is of a mother and child.
