THE STORY
Reported Haunting
Teach's Hole, the waters just off Springer's Point on Ocracoke Island, is associated with the final battle of the notorious pirate Edward Teach, better known as Blackbeard. On November 22, 1718, Blackbeard was killed during a bloody fight with forces led by Lieutenant Robert Maynard. According to Ocracoke folklore, Blackbeard did not entirely leave the island after his death. Stories tell of a large, bearded apparition appearing around Springer's Point and of Blackbeard's headless ghost wandering the shoreline near Teach's Hole, supposedly searching for his missing head. The legend has become one of Ocracoke Island's best-known ghost stories.
