THE STORY

Reported Haunting

The historic Baldpate Inn, now known as Seven Keys Lodge, has accumulated numerous ghost stories during more than a century of operation. Guests and staff have reported unexplained footsteps, mysterious sounds, and other activity attributed to spirits said to remain within the mountain lodge.

Built in 1917 by Gordon and Ethel Mace, the place stayed in the family until 1986. Folks say Ethel and Gordon weren’t ready to part with it, though. Ethel’s ghost sits in a wing-back rocking chair near a fireplace with her feet up, reading the Bible, in an old storage room. The pair don’t like smoking or drinking, so guests here find that their cigarette packs are missing or their cigarettes won’t stay lit, and drinks often spill or fly off the tables.
