THE STORY
Reported Haunting
America's largest privately owned home has inspired ghost stories since the Vanderbilt family occupied the estate. Visitors and employees have reported hearing disembodied voices, footsteps, and the laughter of children, while some claim to have encountered the apparitions of George and Edith Vanderbilt inside Biltmore House.
The famous Biltmore Estate was owned by George W. Vanderbilt, died from complications of appendicitis in 1914. Afterward, his wife would sit in front of the marble fireplace in the library and talk to George’s spirit. Now, witnesses say you can still hear her voice talking, and both spirits are said to linger in their mansion. George has been felt in the Billiard Room and the Oak Sitting Room, and apparitions have been seen along with laughter and screams. A phantom headless orange cat has been spotted many times between the Gardens and the Bass Pond. Many other phenomena have been reported at this vast historic home and tourist attraction.
