THE STORY

Reported Haunting

The childhood home of author James Thurber is said to be haunted by several spirits connected to the property's long history. Visitors have reported apparitions, mysterious footsteps, and unexplained sounds throughout the house.

Thurber House, a nonprofit literary center and Thurber museum, is believe to be haunted. It was the home of Jamer Thurber, author and “New Yorker” cartoonist, and Thurber himself was reported to have had a ghostly experience. Witnesses now have heard footsteps on the back stairs and seen moving figures and books throwing themselves at customers. Legend has it that the haunts come from the nearby mental instititution that burned down in 1868. The site was featured on an episode of TV’s Ghost Hunters.
