THE STORY

Reported Haunting

Tolomato Cemetery is associated with numerous ghost stories arising from its long history as one of St. Augustine's oldest burial grounds. Visitors have reported apparitions, unexplained voices, and mysterious lights among the graves, including stories involving the spirits of people buried within the historic cemetery.

One of the oldest in the U.S., this cemetery has a spooky story. It is said that a young woman once was being prepared for burial here, and during her funeral procession her forehead was accidentally punctured while passing under an Apopinax tree. She bled profusely; it was discovered that she was not actually dead, and she narrowly escaped from being buried alive. Six years later, the woman really did pass away and was buried in the cemetery. Witnesses say her apparition, as well as the apparitions of children, can be seen on the grounds.
