THE STORY

Reported Haunting

Formerly known as the Guthery House Apartments and now operated as Elevate at Tryon, this historic Charlotte apartment building was the site of a devastating 1940 fire that killed five people. Residents have since reported unexplained knocking, feelings of being watched, strange noises, shadowy or humanlike figures and pets reacting intensely to apparently empty rooms and walls.

The apartment building at 508 North Tryon Street has been known as Guthery House, Tryon House Apartments and more recently Elevate at Tryon. On March 13, 1940, a boiler explosion triggered a catastrophic fire that killed five residents and injured nine. Modern residents and former tenants have described mysterious knocks when no one was outside, unexplained voices and noises, sensations of being watched and apparent figures inside the building. One longtime resident believed the hazy woman appearing near a painting was Rowena Dickinson, one of the victims of the 1940 fire.
