THE STORY
Reported Haunting
Motorists along Ironville Pike near the former Twin Oaks Swimming Pool have reported a mysterious woman dressed in white walking beside the road between midnight and 1 a.m. Witnesses say that after passing her and looking back, the woman has completely disappeared.
Twin Oaks Swimming Pool opened along Ironville Pike outside Columbia in 1936 and remained a popular summertime destination until closing in the late 1990s. Years later, Uncharted Lancaster received a firsthand account from a family whose members reported repeatedly seeing a woman dressed in white walking along Ironville Pike beside the former pool between midnight and 1 a.m. On at least one occasion, witnesses turned around after passing her and found that she had vanished. Research into the site uncovered a documented tragedy from July 22, 1945, when thirteen-year-old Dolores Fay Wright drowned in the pool after apparently suffering a medical emergency. No evidence establishes that the roadside apparition is Dolores, and the identification remains speculation. Other woman-in-white reports have also occurred near the historic Mifflin property on nearby Norwood Road, further complicating the legend. The swimming pool no longer exists and a private residence has since been constructed on the former site. The reported apparitions concern the surrounding roadside area; the property itself should not be entered without permission.
