THE STORY
Reported Haunting
According to local legend, the cries of a lost infant can sometimes be heard around this bridge at night. Some versions also describe the spirit of the child's mother searching for her baby. The underlying tragedy remains folklore, with several different versions circulating locally.
This old bridge on Sardis Road near Rose Hill Plantation is one of South Carolina's many locations carrying the Crybaby Bridge legend. Local tradition tells of a mother or young woman whose baby was thrown or lost from the bridge into the water below. Visitors are said to hear the disembodied cries of an infant after dark, and some versions of the story describe the apparition or voice of a distraught mother searching for her child. The details of the tragedy vary considerably between retellings and should be regarded as folklore rather than documented history.
