The University of Akron, founded in 1870 by the Universalist Church, has a few buildings rumored ot be haunted. One of them is the Sigma Nu House. Campus legend has it that a sorority girl hanged herself in the boiler room and her spirit lingers here to this day. Another haunted place here is the 1871 Hower House, originally a home for John and Susan Hower and their family. Susan Hower is said to remain here in spirit, angry because her husband had cheated on her. The ghost is believed to appear in a frightening manner to any male who enters the house. And the ghost of a young girl is believed to roam in the TKE fraternity house, which in 1889 was built for servants’ quarters for the Hower House. A grave of a 15-year-old girl with the last name Wilson lies on the grounds, and it is believed that she is the spirit who haunts the house. Her apparition as well as glowing lights have been seen.
