THE STORY

Reported Haunting

The University of Northern Colorado is associated with several campus ghost stories involving apparitions and unexplained activity in its historic buildings. Students and staff have reported mysterious footsteps, voices, and other unusual occurrences attributed to spirits said to inhabit the campus.

The University of Northern Colorado is said to be haunted by ghosts both real and imaginary. “Edith” was created when photographer Barry Gutierrez made a series of ghostly photographs starring dance student Jamie Mills, but real disembodied spirits are said to linger here as well, from a ghost who stacks chairs in Gray Hall to George, who slams doors at Belford Hall. There are too many ghostly legends here to tell about them all, but here is just a sampling: At Turner Hall, a ghost slams multiple doors all at once, and Stoney Ghosty leaves a phantom marijuana smell. He is said to be a student who died from drug abuse. A ghostly janitor haunts the basement of Harrison, and the real Edith is said to roll marbles in the attic and tinker with TVs in two dorms: Wiebking and Wilson. Other places rumored to be haunted include Gunter Hall, Kepner Hall, Tobey-Kendel dining hall, Crabbe Hall, Michener Library, the outdoor Garden Theater and the tunnels underneath the campus.
