THE STORY

Reported Haunting

Utstein Abbey is one of Norway's most famous haunted historic sites. Visitors have reported ghostly monks, mysterious footsteps, shadow figures, and unexplained activity throughout the medieval monastery.

Utstein Abbey is associated with the ghost of Cecilia Garmann, who died in childbirth in 1759 at age 25. According to The Hidden North, her husband Christoffer promised on her deathbed that he would never remarry, but became engaged to a much younger woman about 20 years later. During the wedding ceremony at Stavanger Cathedral, Cecilia reportedly appeared before him. Christoffer died eight days later. Cecilia is now said to wander the abbey dressed in a wedding gown.
