THE STORY

Reported Haunting

The historic Wayne County Courthouse in Wooster is said to be haunted by an apparition courthouse employees call the "Lady in Pink." The figure has reportedly appeared in hallways and was once observed on a courthouse security monitor even though no one could be seen in the hallway itself.

The Wayne County Courthouse in Wooster, Ohio, has developed a longstanding reputation for unexplained activity, most notably involving an apparition known as the "Lady in Pink." Former Common Pleas Court Administrator James Fox, who described himself as skeptical, reported seeing a reddish-pink figure on a courthouse security monitor. When he looked directly down the same hallway, no one was there, yet the figure reportedly remained visible on the screen. Courthouse workers have also reported strange activity involving a freight elevator that requires a key but has allegedly opened unexpectedly, as well as cleaning carts that appeared to move on their own. Some employees and overnight workers have reported other unusual experiences, and stories intensified during interior renovations in 1999 when third-shift construction crews claimed to encounter unexplained phenomena. Local legend connects the Lady in Pink to a murder said to have occurred in a courtroom, although the identity and historical circumstances of the apparition have not been conclusively established.
