THE STORY
Reported Haunting
The site of the 1910 Wellington avalanche is associated with reports of apparitions, disembodied voices, screams and other unexplained activity along the abandoned Great Northern Railway grade.
The abandoned railroad settlement of Wellington was the scene of one of the deadliest avalanches in United States history. On March 1, 1910, an avalanche swept two Great Northern Railway trains from the tracks and killed 96 people. The former townsite and railroad grade are now explored along the Iron Goat Trail. The tragedy has produced longstanding paranormal stories involving unexplained voices, apparitions, screams, cold spots and the sensation of being watched along the former railway and near the abandoned tunnels and snow sheds.
