Wookey Hole is famously associated with the legend of the Witch of Wookey Hole, whose petrified remains are traditionally said to lie within the caves. Both the caves and nearby mill have also been associated with apparitions, unexplained sounds, and other strange experiences connected to centuries of local folklore and tragedy.
Both the caves and the nearby mill have had their share of tragedy. In the caves, a skeleton from the 11th century was uncovered and is thought to have belonged to a witch who still haunts the cave; a diver also lost life in here in 1949. In the mill, former workers are seen and are believed to have lost their lives at the hands of the equipment. A very aggressive man has also made his presence known in here.
