THE STORY

Reported Haunting

The Yellow Jacket Mine was the site of an 1869 underground fire that killed at least thirty-five miners and spread into neighboring workings. Local ghost lore connects the lost miners to apparitions and other unexplained activity reported around Gold Hill and the nearby saloon built above the mine.

An 1869 fire led to the hauntings at this mine. The enormous fire was impossible to contain by firefighters, and expanded into other mines. More than 35 miners were killed, and not all the bodies were recovered. Reports say 11 of them stayed behind in spirit form to haunt the mine. The TV show Ghost Adventures featured the site on one of its episodes.
